Casey Demons
VFL
Casey Demons and the Melbourne Football Club partnered up back in 2009. In this time, we have accrued one premiership in 2022 beating the Southport Sharks by 32 points. Our affiliation meant that many Melbourne listed players were part of this premiership team, including Jacob van Rooyen, Blake Howes, Oskar Baker, Jake Melksham, Daniel Turner, Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Kade Chandler, Bailey Laurie, Taj Woewodin, Judd McVee, Mitch Brown, Toby Bedford, Luke Dunstan, Sam Weidemann, Adam Tomlinson and Joel Smith.
Casey not only has the Melbourne listed players that are coming back after injury or players that are not in the Senior squad, they also have their own list which can then showcase their talents to be noticed by AFL clubs. Season 2025 is a big change in the Casey list, over the past few years we have said goodbye to some stalwarts of the club. Jack Hutchins, Jimmy Munro and Mitch White lead the red and blue for many years. Mitch stood down as Captain at the end of the 2024 season announcing his retirement from VFL footy now going back to his home club of Rosebud. We have also said farewell to our two vice-captains in Jack Bell and Roan Steele. Jack has gone back to his home club of Old Haileybury and Roan has flown west to join West Perth. As sad as it is that players of their calibre leave, it does mean we can get some new faces into the club. This year we welcome back former Melbourne listed player Deakyn Smith, who has been announced as the 2025 Captain. Deakyn won the Casey Best & Fairest in 2023. We also welcome Mitch Hardie from Geelong, Riley Bonner from St Kilda Via Port Adelaide and Tyson Sruk from Carlton VFL. Our coach, Taylor Whitford, who is now in his third season as Senior coach brings experience to our team.
Many other talented players are part of the Casey squad, Kai Windsor (older brother of Caleb Windsor), Roy George (uncle of Kosi Pickett), Tom Freeman, Tyler Edwards, Paddy Cross and Charlie Peters to name a few.
Unfortunately, the 2025 fixture has not been overly nice to us Dees fans who want to go and support both Casey and Melbourne, a lot of same day games. If you can make it to any Casey games this season the boys would love to hear some cheering.
VFLW
The Casey VFLW team has been playing since 2018. Sadly, we are yet to win a flag but be sure there will be some premierships in our future.
Early in the W season we have quite a few of our Melbourne AFLW listed players taking to the field. This gives our women some match fitness and some intense game time after off-season surgery/rehab. It is always great to see the likes of Maeve Chaplin running the opposition ragged in the back line and Alyssa Bannan taking marks and scoring some goals.
Matt Brewer is our coach who took over in 2024, he is also a line coach for our Melbourne W team as well. This year Matt is joined by now retired former Casey captain and Melbourne AFLW player, Sammie Johnson.
Our Casey players come from both AFLW backgrounds and starting out from local clubs. We have Meg McDonald (former Richmond) and Jo Lin & Sophie Casey (former Collingwood) to name a few. Our amazing leaders include Ally Kirkwood and Shree Fairchild.
The Women’s season starts Easter weekend in April, and they have all their games scheduled for Saturdays, some games being double-headers with our Casey men.
We would love to get heaps more support for our W team. They are an awesome bunch of women who would love to see more faces at their games.
Did you know your Melbourne membership gets you into Casey games for free? Another reason to get down and support Casey Demons. There are also membership and sponsorship options with Casey if you are interested. Rachael Lewis at Casey is the Events Manager and she will be more than happy to discuss these further. Also, feel free to reach out to Carlie or Matt Jakymczuk at any Melbourne games, they are across all of this as well.
