We won't ask you your age but how long have you been a Melbourne supporter?
I’ve been a Melbourne supporter since I was little. Dad apparently put a Melbourne beanie on my head when I was hours old, a crazy thing to do since it was a 42 degree day! 2025 marks my 40th year of being a member. How did you become a Melbourne supporter? We had the choice between Melbourne (Dad’s team) and Hawthorn (Mum’s team). I chose Melbourne because a) I figured Dad was into footy more than Mum, so choosing Melbourne meant more chances of going; b) I idolised my big brother who also chose Melbourne; and c) my primary school uniform was brown and yellow and I figured I had enough poo and wee in my life! How long have you been in the cheer squad? And what made you decide to join? I first joined the cheer squad in the early 90s but only got a year or two. I then re-joined in 2021 as we were coming out of COVID because I am a Redlegs member, and I wanted to make sure my nephews were able to fit with me, so I joined the 3 of us up. I steadily got more and more involved in volunteering and I haven’t looked back. Favourite current player? I have a couple, actually. I love watching Kozzy Pickett play, he’s exciting when he gets near the ball. Trent Rivers is such a lovely person to chat to. And I’m part of a group that sponsors Ed Langdon. In the women’s they’re all my favourite, but I have to make a special mention of Gabby Colvin, since I’m her Gold level sponsor. Favourite Melbourne player ever? Definitely Robbie Flower. I feel so privileged I got to see him play when I was a kid. And he put his No 2 on the back of my guernsey in his shop leaving me as an 11 year old speechless. Favourite game? Apart from the Grand Final, I’d have to say Round 7 2008, when we came from around 50 points down at half time to defeat Freo. Watching Austin Wonaeamirri tear them apart was magic. Greatest player ever? This can be from any club. I can’t go past Robbie Flower, so silky smooth as wingmen went. Highest point in your footballing career Going up to Brisbane to witness the AFLW premiership in 2022, that was special. Lowest point in your footballing career Probably the 1987 Prelim, for reason most Melbourne supporters prefer not to remember!! Any football superstitions? No, not really! Craziest thing you've ever done for the Dees. After the premiership I needed a new set of lawn bowls. I wound up spending $750 on a new set of Henselite Dreamlines in red and blue with MFC monogram and engraved with 2021 AFL Premiers on them. |
