AFL Women's Exhibition Matches
On a balmy Saturday evening at the Whitten Oval the gates were thrown open with free entry to see Melbourne v Western Bulldogs. A tremendous crowd enjoyed a quality match at a local footy ground. Unfortunately, Melbourne surrendered the Hampson-Hardeman Cup on this night. We’d like to think when we visit the Western Oval and see that cup in the Bulldogs trophy cabinet we’ll recall all we’ve done for Women’s Football!
In 2016 there were 10 Women’s exhibition matches to be played across the season, across the country, in anticipation of moving into the inaugural AFLW 2017 season.
Melbourne played Western Bulldogs after our JLT match at Craigieburn. On a windy day at an open field our crepe paper banner was challenged. So were our girls, who were unfortunately defeated.
Our women’s team played again at the MCG against a Queensland Women’s team in May. The Demon Army knew the Queenslanders would be bringing a run through down, in a handbag. It was up to us to give them a quick lesson on how to pole a banner and hold it up for their team.
In 2015 there were two Melbourne v Western Bulldogs exhibition matches. In Rd.8 we were hosting at the G, with a return match in Rd.20 at Etihad Stadium.
The best 50 female footballers were selected to play. We are now beginning to recognise players, like Tayla Harris and Sabrina Fredrick-Straub, who would move on to other AFLW teams in the soon-to-be-established AFLW 2017 competition.
In 2014 the Western Bulldogs hosted the Women’s Exhibition match at Etihad Stadium in July as a pre-match to our AFL Western Bulldogs v Melbourne match.
The days of joint run throughs was over. Each team ran out at opposing ends through their own team run through.
The Hampson-Hardeman was retained by Melbourne.
The inaugural AFLW exhibition match was played in June 2013. It was Melbourne v Western Bulldogs. Our coach was Michelle Cowan. Our captain was Daisy Pearce. and the Demon Army sponsored Chelsea Randall. The Demon Army made a banner for both teams to jointly run through. Even the umpires ran through our banner!
