Breast Cancer Network Australia & The Demon Army
The Melbourne Football Club has a long association with the BCNA. It extends back to our 2005 season when the very first Field of Women, using real people instead of silhouettes, saw 11,500 people in pink ponchos and 100 in blue ponchos assemble on the MCG to form the well known Pink Lady image. The Demon Army cast aside our traditional red and blue crepe paper and made a pink match day banner for our team to run through.
Pink Lady events have followed through the seasons. Our members have joined the Field of Women. We’ve made multiple pink run throughs for BCNA pre-match events. We’ve handed out and worn pink caps and ponchos, turning the MCG pink. We’ve donated our match-day fund-raising effort to BCNA and encouraged our members to contribute what they can.
We’re reminded every week of the important role the BCNA network plays in everyday lives when our long time member, Margie, turns up to help make our run through and hold it up. Margie is a survivor.
2010 - What a wet night!
Marg, shielded from the rain by her nephew Jason, is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed at the end of our 2006 season. When we defeated St.Kilda in the first elimination final there were tears all round....tears because we’d won, tears because Marg revealed she’d been recently diagnosed and was to begin treatment.
She’s still with us today and just as active and involved.
2016 - The day we made 2 pink run throughs, one for our team and the other for 300 Women lead by Raelene Boyle & Susan Alberti, amongst others, to break through during the pre-match.
And here’s Marg again, this time with her granddaughter Claire.
2017 - Last season the Club again hosted a special effort for BCNA awareness and fund-raising. The Demon Army was involved in the pre-match activities by way of hoisting 4 special banners telling the tale of 4 different Breast cancer patients. Family and friends were invited to join the four guests at their banner whilst their stories were told.
Aunty Pam is Jeff Garlett’s aunty. Mark Foster was there representing the men who develop breast cancer. Our 2017 BCNA effort also came just as we’d heard our star full-forward had lost his father/discovered he had testicular cancer. It’s not relevant to the BCNA-Demons alliance but a double message can be read into the banner.
In 2018 the BCNA will be hosting Field of Women at the MCG before our Rd.21 game against Sydney. Registrations are open to join the Field of Women.
