Qantas and Virgin fly to Alice Springs, although only Qantas flies direct from Melbourne. Virgin has a stop over in Adelaide. You may be tempted to fly into Uluru to try and save a few dollars but this is rarely a cost-effective option. It is difficult to hire a car from Uluru and even if you can get a bus to Alice, you'll be looking at $100+ each way. HEADING TO THE GROUND Traeger Park is on the main road in/out of Alice Springs and is an easy 1.5km walk from the town centre. Parking is available but get there early. WHERE WE SIT The Demon Army don't tend to actually sit at Traeger Park. You'll find us standing behind the goals at the Traeger Avenue end of the ground. Unfortunately this is at the opposite end to the strawberries and ice cream food van but we manage. WHERE WE STAY Although there are plenty of places to stay in Alice Springs, you'll need to book early. When two AFL teams roll into town, accommodation options dry up pretty quickly. WHERE WE MEET You'll often find us at Uncles Tavern, before and after the match. Just look out for a huge table of red and blue. THINGS TO DO Uluru is obvious choice for activites in and around Alice Springs. A number of tour companies run day trips to Ayers Rock but be aware that Uluru is a 5 hour drive from Alice Springs. That's 10 hours of driving in one day. If you want to drive yourself, car hire in Alice Springs is quite pricey. Hiring a campervan is a cheaper option if you're planning on staying out near Uluru overnight. There's hardly any accommodation out there and everything is pretty pricey so it's helpful to be able to sleep in a campervan and bring your own food. Closer to Alice, there are a number of tourist activities to try. Camel riding at sunset, the Alice Springs Desert Park, Alice Springs reptile centre and the kangaroo sanctuary are all great ways to spend a few hours. Every Sunday, the Todd Mall Market runs, featuring plenty of local arts and crafts and a heap of food trucks. The moment the sun goes down, the temperature drops dramatically. Overnight temperatures during winter can often drop below zero so bring warm clothes (and your winter pyjamas!). |
